ACE THE JOB INTERVIEW
THE FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS NEEDED TO ACE ANY JOB INTERVIEW
By: Robert Ritua, MBA, Job Coach
Introduction
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” -Proverb
The hiring process most businesses use is designed to eliminate as many job applicants as possible to narrow their search for the most qualified candidate for the position. The objective for you as a job seeker is to make it through the selection and screening process.
Some of the topics covered in this book are communication and interpersonal skills, selling, emotional and ethical intelligence, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, impromptu speaking, and even business etiquette and honing your personality. These skills and professional values are the fundamentals to ace any job interview. Most other job interview books that I have read or have come across just briefly mention these professional values and soft skills, if they mention them at all. Use this book as a supplement to your library of materials to guide you throughout the job-seeking and screening process.
Although this book gives examples of answers to some common interview questions as well, the answers are not meant for you to memorize and use. The intent is to get you to tap into and apply some of your own professional values and skills to come up with your own unique and genuine answers so that you stand out from other potential candidates. This book will help you even more effectively utilize some of the professional values and skills you already possess to strategically and competitively interview with confidence and poise. Tapping into these skills and professional values will not only help in a job interview, but will also help you keep your job, as these are key traits that employers require an employee to have.
“Studies by Stanford Research Institute and the Carnegie Mellon Foundation among Fortune 500 CEOs have discovered that 75% of long-term job success resulted from soft skills and only 25% from technical skills.” (1)
However, it is worth mentioning here that this does not mean that hard skills are not important. Hard skills are still necessary, Just because I am meticulous, pay attention to detail, can stay calm and cool headed in stressful situations, am coachable, and am able to have a steady hand when I use a scalpel doesn’t necessarily makes me well qualified to perform the duties of a surgeon. You still need the knowledge and the know-how to be successful.
This book cannot teach you the specific knowledge and the technical skills needed for a job. If you are an auto mechanic or a registered nurse or even a lawyer, this book does not have the capacity to cover the education, training, and the technical skills for your profession. Besides, I am most likely not the subject-matter expert in your profession. You must assess yourself, your qualifications, and acknowledge your strengths and work on your weaknesses.
Most of you take the time to master your profession but you rarely take the time to master job interviews. You use your skills at home and at work. You should use your skills in a job interview, as well. Although this book may be considered an introductory course to the skills needed to ace any job interview, at the end of each chapter, I also offer exercises or more suggested reading to help further enhance those skills. Everyone are great at something but there is always room for improvement; so personal growth is very important. Make it a habit to apply these skills on a consistent basis to continuously improve and be even more prepared for interviews.
The methods taught in this book are not 100% guaranteed to get you a job. Results vary according to the individual and circumstances. There are many different reasons the methods you are using may not be working for you. It may be the amount of time and effort you spend preparing for the job interview, or your level of job interviewing skills such as your emotional intelligence, or your interpersonal and communication skills. It may be the way you conducted yourself in the job interview, the way you dressed or even how you were referred for the job. You may have even interviewed well but the employer elected to hire another candidate instead of you.
Because I cannot guarantee that you will dedicate your time and effort in continuously becoming even better in your professional values and soft skills, this book does not guarantee you will get a job. Only you can guarantee your success.
Throughout this book, I share with you some of my knowledge and expertise from my experience in workforce services, career and life coaching, serving in the military, and as a member of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), a Graduate in Master Business Administration (MBA), a Business Owner, and a previous Jobseeker.
